2010 : Ruminations of Life - Part 1
* It is important to have a purpose in life - This will give one the required strength and energy to move ahead in life. This is very different for different people [For e.g.: For some it may be building a business empire, For some it may be art, For some it may be a happy family, etc.]
* Every individual has their strengths and weaknesses ; Look at the strengths and ignore the weaknesses - We are all human!
* Basic human emotions are the same among people all over the world - They are finite ; What varies is when we exhibit these emotions, how we exhibit the same and the extent to which we feel the emotion
* After a point, it is better to write-off some investments / relationships - They are probably not worth your time anymore
* A good network of friends is vital in today's age. Have friends who are not in the same profession as yours. Ensure you have few friends who are doctors and lawyers!
* It is important to find balance in life across the following dimensions - Physical, Mental, Emotional, Spriritual, Financial and Social
* Every creative soul needs inspiration and emotion ; There is no progress without this
* Whatever be an individual's age, social standing or phase of life, there is something one can learn. Just observe and be open to learning

Leadership
Over the past few months, I have had the opportunity of interacting with different people who are successful leaders in their own sphere of influence. While each had a unique leadership style and there were differences in their modus-operandi, I was mulling over what are the common characteristics among these individuals.
My observations below:
* They take complete responsibility and ownership for the task / situation at hand. They drive their teams towards ensuring that the end objective is met
* Challenges / Difficult situations do no deter them ; They handle such situations with great fortitude
* People Management - They are great at managing people (all kinds of them in all kinds of situations)
* Openness of mind and perspective
* Adaptability - They show great adaptability to mould to different situations and circumstances
* Highly Passionate

Learnings from experiences @ Indian Hospitals
Over the last few months, I have had experiences in hospitals in various cities in India. While this has not been the most pleasant life experiences, there are few realizations:
* While the medical system in India is becoming highly commercial, there are doctors / staff of the medical fraternity who are still "noble" - It is heart warming to see this and I have immense respect for these individuals!!!
* If you are dealing with a chronic medical situation, then the patient's comfort with the doctor is the most important consideration - Someone who is genuinely interested in the patient's well-being and will offer the right medical advice anytime of the day / night! Everything else is secondary
* If you are in a difficult situation and need to make an instant decision, the one question which you should ask the doctor is "What would you do if you were in my situation?" - And look straight into the doctor's eyes when he responds. If he / she is unable to respond maintaining eye contact, you may want to re-consider the advice!
* Always try and get a second / third / N th opinion - if time permits! Expect that there will be difference in opinions - Decide based on simple logic and instinct!
* Respect and value the suggestions / priorities of the patient
* Once you have zeroed in on the place of medical care and doctor, all you can do is have faith and hope for the best!
* Never ever exhibit any negative emotion (like grief, anxiety, sadness, etc.) to the patient
* Always ensure that you have basic information on the medical situation at hand. Try and speak to a doctor or friend who has had a similar experience or google
* Always be aware of the Terms and Conditions of your insurance policy
* If you are dealing with a complicated medical situation involving multiple organs, always get the opinion of a general physician - He / She will have a holistic view of the human body ; as opposed to a superspecialist who will look at his / her area of interest (For e.g.: a cardiologist is more likely to focus mostly on the heart)
In the end, trust your instinct!!

Advice
As one enters the threshold of parenthood, if there is one thing that you will recieve in abundance, it is advice. It comes in all shapes & sizes, from all quarters (including near & dear and long lost relatives!!!) - and it surely is FREE!!!. It seems like everyone has something worthwhile to offer by virtue of their experience. While good advice is always valued and treasured, an overdose is certainly not desirable.
While recieving advice,
* Listen - Be open to any advice / inputs / suggestions
* Try to find the rationale of the same - All advice may not be always applicable
* Learn to filter and assimilate based of your individual situation and judgment
While giving advice,
* Make sure you time it right ; else it will fall on deaf ears
* Make sure you give the advice to the right individuals
* Ensure that you communicate it right - Using positive language
Sometimes its better to NOT give any advice, & let individuals learn through experiential learning. Just being around and providing passive support helps!!!

Motherhood Musings...
As a new mom, last few months have made me realize several things:
* I now have a new found respect & admiration for every woman who is a mother - Every woman goes through her own struggle ; & finds the strength to endure & emerge stronger
* Nothing equates experiential learning - No books, classrooms (including IIMB), etc. can teach you life's lessons
* There is infinite power in one's thoughts - Positive thinking can do wonders and give immense inner strength
* A good network of friends and family can help one tide through difficult times
* If you find yourself in a situation & darkness all around, just have faith, patience and persevere - There is light at the end of the dark tunnel
* Nothing lasts forever - Good times and bad times all come with a time stamp

Lessons from my Baby
My little baby is all of 43 days old & she's taught (rather re-inforced) some basic life lesson's...
* Clarity on Priorities : She's so clear on her priorities (Sleep, Food & Physical comfort - Needs to be warm & dry) and has kept them simple - Only 3 priorities
* Single Minded Focus : If she wants something, she wants it & now! Everything else can wait. Sometimes in life its good to have a single minded focus on your objective and be oblivious to everything else!
* Time Table : She has a time table for everything - Sleep time, Feeding time, Entertainment time (& this has to include some live entertainment!!! - Recorded shows will just NOT DO!!!), Bath time, Exercise Time, Loo Time, Cuddly Time, etc. She is clear what needs to be done daily & what can be skipped occasionally :)
* Curiosity : She is curious about everything (I wonder what goes on in her mind) - But she is inquisitive about everything from the TV, to camera, to fan, to mobile, to people, etc. Its important to have child-like curiosity which is a very important pre-requisite for learning and growth
* Communication : In a short span of a few days, she has understood how to communicate her needs, & she does it brilliantly. She modulates the "baby language" and pitch so beautifully. A lesson on the importance of choosing the right tone and voice modulation to effectively communicate any message
