Lessons from a Yoga Workshop

I recently had the opportunity to attend a Yoga Workshop conducted by Suneel Gautam - who is a Yogacharya and Naturopath. Sharing below some interesting learnings and lessons from the workshop.

* Good health really means healthy physically, mentally, spiritually and socially
* The 3 most important requirements for human existence in order of priority - Oxygen, Water and Food
* Human body is 20% acidic and 80% alkaline and hence the food you consume should also be in the same proportion - 20% acidic and 80% alkaline
* Foods which are acidic in nature are wheat, rice, dal, sugar, milk products, dry fruits, etc - Most foods which constitute towards majority of our diet are acidic in nature
* Foods which are alkaline in nature are butter milk, raw milk, raw fruits, raw vegetables, salads, citrus fruits, lemon, jaggery, etc.
* The 3 white powders whose consumptions should be strictly monitored and controlled - Sugar, Salt and Maida (All purpose flour) - Most of these constitute all the junk food that we consume
* Try to consume regional and seasonal foods and vegetables - They are natures way of producing those foods which the body requires at a specific time of the year
* Have breakfast like a king, Lunch like a warrior and Dinner like a beggar - Key for overall well being
* Eat your food slowly and mindfully - Chew well when you eat. You will eat less and consume only what your body requires
* It takes between 15 - 20 minutes for your brain to signal that you've consumed enough food for your body's requirements
* After you wake up, drink a glass of warm water - Excellent for the body
* Before cooking, soak vegetables in water for about 2 hours to remove all possible chemicals and impurities. Rinse and then cook
* Weight of the brain is 2% of body weight and brain requires 20% of oxygen we inhale
* Brain has 2 hemispheres - Right brain is responsible for emotions and Left brain is responsible for logical and scientific thinking. Balance in the functioning of these 2 sides of the brain is key for a balanced life and overall wellness. The practice of Aum Viloma Pranayama facilitates this balance and hences is recommended to be practiced on a regular basis
* Regular practice of exercise and yoga helps in release of endorphins which are known as the feel good hormones, and hence help in reducing stress and enable overall well-being and happiness
* Health is wealth.. Hence focus and investment in your health is the key to a happy and prosperous life
